Focusing on Our Gifts

We’ve established our starting point and plotted a course for our journey to know and develop ourselves. We know some of the obstacles of our Enneagram point and ways to break our habitual patterns. Yet our path would not be complete without a celebration and acknowledgment of our personality’s gift. Often, we dismiss our gift quickly as we move on to the “real work” to be done, fixing, and toning our defective selves I am continually amazed at my students (and myself!) when we forget we even have a gift already built into the default programming Remember, default programming in a computer program or in our personality is there because it works when nothing else does, or when we can’t figure out how to set our preferences or choices.

Revisiting our premise that where attention goes, energy flows, we find that a deliberate focus on our gifts helps them manifest more in our daily lives We can add our inner observer to keep us honest, to help us notice and activate our gift, perpetuating a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Then the judgment of a One truly does become discernment. The Two’s externalization to others’ feelings turns to genuine empathy. The Three’s frenetic multitasking becomes true efficacy. The Four moves from feeling different and special to offering an authentic unique contribution. Five’s withdrawal becomes unattached clarity or wisdom. The Six moves from unconscious duty to loyal commitment. Seven’s excessive giddiness turns to informed optimism. The Eight transforms excessive control to appropriate strength. The Nine transforms passive allowing to genuine acceptance. Our gifts are signposts we can notice, as well as obstacles. We are just less practiced at seeing our best. Acknowledging our strong points helps us integrate the best of our default mode with our new expanded ways of seeing, perceiving, and being. Our journey has just begun.

Exercise: Appreciating Your Gift

Take a few moments each day to reflect on your personality’s gift. When were you last aware of it? How did it manifest? How might it show up in the future?
